"Best of the Best"

We don't measure ourselves by ratings alone — we measure ourselves by you. Every program, every song, every announcement is chosen with one question in mind: does this serve the people listening? BiG SOUND fm exists to be relevant to your life — your mornings, your commutes, your celebrations, your ordinary days. You are not our audience. You are our reason.

65 Years of BiG SOUND

A message to the Vanguard Radio Network family — from the President & CEO

To every member of the Vanguard Radio Network family — on air, behind the scenes, in the communities we serve, and in the studios that have been your second home for years, sometimes decades —

Today, we celebrate 65 years.

Sixty-five years ago, on June 17, 1961, Manuel "Nonong" Gregorio Galvez Jr. had a vision — not just to build a radio station, but to bring a voice to places that didn't yet have one. He didn't go where broadcasting was safe and established. He went where it wasn't. He invested where others hesitated. He believed that every Filipino community, no matter how far, deserved to hear itself reflected in the airwaves. And when Helen came into his life the following year, she became an inseparable part of that story — a partner in every sense as the family and the network grew together. That was the founding spirit of VRN. That was — and still is — what it means to be a vanguard.

A vanguard is not simply someone who leads. A vanguard is someone who goes first — into uncharted territory, often without a map, trusting in the mission and in the people beside them. That is exactly who you are. That is exactly who we have always been.

"We didn't follow the path. We built it."

The legacy Nonong and Helen built did not end with them. It was entrusted to their children — Joy, Marvin, and Noel — each of whom carries a distinct set of strengths, perspectives, and responsibilities. Joy leads with vision and governance as Chairperson. Marvin anchors the organization with his expertise as Treasurer and Corporate Secretary. And as President and CEO, it falls to me to steer the ship forward — but I have never done it alone. The three of us operate as one: where one of us is present, the spirit and commitment of all three is felt. That is how we honor what our parents built, and that is how we intend to carry it forward.

And now, as the third generation — Dominic, Kitkat, and Sage — begins to take their place alongside us, the story of this family, and this network, continues with new energy and new purpose.

Think about where we planted our flags. Cabanatuan. Baguio. Solano. Cauayan. La Union. Tuguegarao. Tagbilaran. Bongabong in Oriental Mindoro. Ten stations. Ten communities. Ten acts of faith that said: you matter, your stories matter, your voices matter. We didn't wait for those markets to be proven. We proved them.

And we have never stopped pioneering.

When other stations were still doing everything by hand in the 1990s, we were among the first in the country to implement broadcast automation. People said it was too early, too risky, too bold. We said: that is exactly why we do it. Because being a vanguard means reading the horizon before anyone else sees it — and moving toward it with confidence.

Today, we take that same step again. We are among the first broadcasters in the Philippines to embrace artificial intelligence — not as a replacement for the people who make this network breathe, but as a tool to make your work smarter, faster, and more powerful. AI does not write the relationships you have built with your listeners. It does not replicate the warmth of a DJ who knows a community by name, or the instinct of a producer who knows exactly what a town needs to hear at seven in the morning. What it does is free you to do more of that — and to do it better.

The future of broadcasting is not a threat. It is an invitation — and we are already walking through the door.

"Broadcasting is not dying. It is evolving — and vanguards evolve with it."

I want to speak directly to those of you who have been with us the longest. You have seen this network grow from one station to ten. You have watched equipment change, formats shift, technology arrive and arrive again. You have lived through every season of this organization — the difficult years and the triumphant ones. Your institutional knowledge, your relationships, your dedication — these are not things that can be automated or replicated. They are the foundation upon which everything new is built.

You are not relics of the past. You are the reason the future is possible.

To our program creators and hosts — you are the heartbeat of this network. Every show you craft, every segment you shape, every story you choose to tell is an act of service to the communities that tune in. You are not just filling airtime. You are building culture. You are maintaining trust. You are the reason people turn us on in the morning and keep us on through the night.

Long before the word "influencer" existed, our DJs were already doing it — building loyal communities one listener at a time, one song dedication at a time, one morning show at a time. They are the original influencers. And today, as the world catches up to what they have always known how to do, we don't ask them to change — we encourage them to go further. Build the community deeper. Be more present, more personal, more real. That is your superpower. It always has been.

To our community builders — those who engage with listeners, who show up for events, who make VRN feel like a neighbor and not just a broadcaster — thank you. In an age where media can feel distant and impersonal, you make us real to the people we serve. That is irreplaceable.

To our traffic, marketing, and accounting teams — you are the engine that keeps everything moving. Every airtime placement, every campaign, every peso accounted for — your discipline and precision make it possible for everyone else to do their work. The station sounds great because the business runs well. That is because of you.

To our technical teams and operations staff — you are the invisible infrastructure of everything we do. When a signal stays clean, when a stream runs stable, when the system keeps running through the night — that is you. Your work is often unseen and always essential. We see it. We are grateful for it.

And to every employee, at every level, in every station: you are part of this story. Not as a footnote. Not as a supporting character. As a co-author. The next chapter of Vanguard Radio Network will be written by you as much as by anyone in leadership — because that is the only way great broadcasting has ever been made.

Sixty-five years is not just a milestone. It is proof. Proof that what we believe in works. Proof that going first — going where others haven't — is not recklessness. It is vision. It is purpose. It is the Vanguard way.

The airwaves are still ours to shape. The communities are still listening. The next 65 years are still unwritten.

Let's go make some BiG SOUND.

Sa Aming mga Tagapakinig
at Mga Kasosyo

Mahal namin kayo.

65 Years on the Air

From ₱6,000 borrowed in faith to ten stations reaching communities across Luzon and Visayas. The story of Vanguard Radio Network.

1960
A borrowed ₱6,000 and a vision
A 29-year-old law student from Far Eastern University borrowed ₱6,000 from his Aunt Dominga Caminong and — with the grace of God — launched DZGT 1050kHz in Caloocan City.
1961
Vanguard Radio Network is founded
Republic Act 3258, a certified urgent bill of Congress, grants the franchise during President Garcia's administration. DZYG 1330kHz goes on air in Cabanatuan City.

DZXO 1188 AM & DWMG 1395 AM launch
DZXO 1188 launches in Cabanatuan. A month later, DWMG 1395 goes live in Solano — the first radio station in the province of Nueva Vizcaya.

1972
Martial Law. Stations closed. VRN endures.
When Martial Law was declared, DZYG was shut down permanently. VRN continued broadcasting on DZXO and DWMG and began rebuilding.

Manuel "Nonong" Galvez, Jr. — in memoriam
The founder passed away on September 21, 2014. His children Joy Galvez-Dominado (Chairperson), Noel C. Galvez (President & CEO), and Dr. Marvin Galvez (Treasurer and Corporate Secretary) carry the network forward in his name.
2018
Congress speaks again — 25 more years
On October 30, 2018, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act No. 11111 — extending Vanguard Radio Network's franchise for another 25 years, through 2043. Four years after the founder's passing, the Philippine Congress looked at everything Nonong Galvez had built and made their verdict clear: keep broadcasting. The franchise he fought for in 1961 now belongs to the generation of his grandchildren.

Our Name

big God,
small i

In 1994, our founder opened a station in Baguio City — DWBG. The call letters "BG" caught his eye: Baguio and Galvez. He put an "i" in the middle and had something new: BiG.

His children gave it its lasting meaning. The capital B stood for God. The lowercase i stood for the self — kept small, kept humble. The G for Galvez, the family that built it all.

From that day forward, every FM station in Vanguard Radio Network carried the name BiG SOUND fm. Not just a brand — a philosophy on the air.
